2012 Łódź Design Festival in Figures
This year’s edition of the Festival achieved record-breaking numbers for attendees and exhibited items.
28 October, the 6th edition of Łódź Design Festival, one of the largest events of its kind devoted exclusively to the art of design, came to an end. It lasted for 11 days, during which it attracted over 45,000 participants, while a variety of exhibitions and events were held at more than 20 locations across Łódź.
The interiors of the Festival Centre spanning over an area of 10,000 sq m were arranged by Centrala, a Warsaw-based interior design practice. 35 kilometres of multi-coloured ribbon were used for decorative purposes and according to the motto of this year’s festival (AWARENESS), the ribbon will now be recycled and reused by Łódź’s designers but not only them.
More than 1,100 objects by over 640 designers were presented in all festival exhibitions. Their work provoked discussion of new dimensions of social awareness: ecological, material, spatial and transportational. The Forum: Design & Architecture gave attendees the opportunity to participate in more than 35 lectures held by our guests from all over the world. They addressed the topics related to the current changes in today’s world and new working methods used by designers.
It was possible to organise 2012 Łódź Design Festival thanks to cooperation with nearly 90 partners, including the City of Łódź Office and the Main Festival Patron Paradyż Ceramics. As in previous years, volunteer staff provided substantial support to the Festival. More than 300 people had reported their willingness to help and thereby participate in this exceptional feast of design.
Łódź City President Hanna Zdanowska has expressed her support for the Festival by drawing attention to the fact that the event is consistent with the development strategy for Łódź as the city of creative industries and it has a major positive impact on the city’s image. The 6th edition of Łódź Design Festival has attracted wide media coverage, from TV and radio to print and online, with more than 1,300 news releases and articles since the 1st of August 2012.
The winner of this year’s make me! competition receiving a main prize of PLN 20,000 funded by the Major Festival Patron Paradyż Ceramics is Jan Lutyk for his ‘Ribbon’ chair design project. The judges appreciated above all the understanding of the material used by the designer in his work, the clarity and simplicity of the message and the awareness of comprehensive thinking – from initial product idea through to transfer to production. A delicate and yet stable construction is another strength of the winning project.
- Publication in Elle Decoration for Małgorzata Dziembaj for the OVO project for finding a beautiful way to familiarise our mind with the inevitability of death. Everything begins and ends. The form of an ideal white ball may be taken literally or in a metaphysical sense as the perfect metaphor for a beginning, while enclosing ashes inside constitutes a unifying link between birth and death.
- A study trip to the head office of Interprint in Germany where the Design Center of the Interprint Group is located for Jan Lutyk for his ‘Ribbon’ chair design project
- RM58 classic armchair designed by Roman Modzelewski goes to Jan Lutyk for his ‘Ribbon’ chair design project

Łódź Design Festival
Łódź Design Festival is an event which, since its creation in 2007, has been the ground for thought and experience exchange for artistic circles who identify with design in general, and for business. The efforts of the organizer – Łódź Art Center – and the support of many partners made it possible for the festival to become the largest Polish event on design only a few years after it had been launched as a local, minor exhibition. The festival presents design in its various modes – starting from industrial design, through arts and crafts, graphic design, architecture, up to fashion.
The key point of Łódź Design Festival is always a thematic main programme consisting of curator exhibitions. It is developed and completed by open and varied range of accompanying events. The most important are: lectures held by world renowned specialists, contest for young designers “make me!” and a portfolio review which enables the students and graduates of art schools to confront their ideas directly with professionals (curators, designers and producers).
